We at Mastermind have always believed in simplifying students' learning experiences through our courses by providing them with necessary support system. Our Abacus course is structured considering children's psychology, making it feasible, enjoyable, and effective. To ensure the best outcome of the Abacus training, we provide them a student's kit for Abacus learning. Classes are conducted twice a week, one hour each.
The Mastermind Abacus Kit For Students
Our Abacus kit consists of the following:
· A 17-rod abacus, along with the pouch, is given to all registered students for offline or online Abacus Classes.
· Pencil, sharpener & eraser.
· Course Book for each level separately, supporting regular quality practice for offline classes. The PDF of the book is available for download for those opting for online classes.
· Mastermind's t-shirt (branded apparel with the company's logo) for students of offline classes only.
· Mastermind's bag (to carry Abacus instrument, books, and other stationery) for the students of the offline Abacus classes only.
· A Parents Handbook is provided. It is a special book for parents to use to help their children practice Abacus mental Math at home.
· Access to our abacus learning app and speed-building practice software. In the early years this content was supplied on a DVD; it is now delivered digitally so children can practise on any device.
Offline Kit And Online Kit: What Your Child Gets
Parents often ask whether a child learning from home receives the same material as a child attending a centre. The learning content is identical, because both follow the same course design explained in the Mastermind method of abacus teaching. Only the physical items differ, as the table below shows. If you would like to know why the child's abacus looks different from the one the teacher uses in class, read our post on the student abacus and teacher abacus.
| Kit item | Offline classes at a centre | Live online classes |
|---|---|---|
| 17-rod abacus with pouch | Given to every registered student | Given to every registered student |
| Course book for each level | Printed book, level by level | PDF of the level book to download |
| Parents Handbook | Provided, for home practice | Provided, for home practice |
| Learning app and speed-building practice | Used at home between classes | Used at home between classes |
| Mastermind t-shirt and bag | Included | Not part of the online kit |
Whichever mode you choose, the daily practice pages matter as much as the class itself. You can read more about how the books and practice sheets work together in our post on abacus books and practice worksheets, or create extra sheets at home with our free abacus worksheet generator.
Mastermind's Abacus student’s kit has been well thought-out after a thorough market study and considering the requirements.
The kit is supplied to all the students by our Abacus franchises to train them efficiently.
Frequently Asked Questions About The Abacus Student Kit
Do we have to buy an abacus separately before the classes begin?
No. A 17-rod abacus along with its pouch is given to every registered student, whether the child attends a centre or learns from home. You do not need to buy an instrument in advance or match any particular brand. The rest of the kit, including the course book and the Parents Handbook, is handed over at the same time.
Why is a 17-rod abacus used and not a smaller one?
A 17-rod instrument gives the child enough columns to work with large numbers right through the course, so the same abacus lasts from the first level to the last. Smaller toy versions run out of rods very quickly. Our post on the structure of an abacus explains what each rod and bead stands for.
My child learns online. Will the abacus reach us at home?
Yes. Children enrolled in live online abacus classes receive the physical abacus and pouch as well, because bead work on a real instrument is the starting point of the course. The level books come as downloadable PDFs instead of printed copies, and the branded t-shirt and bag are only for centre students.
What should we do if a bead comes loose or the abacus is damaged?
Speak to your child's trainer or your nearest centre rather than trying to force the rod back yourself. A damaged instrument slows a child down in class and can teach wrong finger habits. Small repairs or a replacement can usually be arranged through the centre so practice is not interrupted.
I have never learnt abacus. Can I still use the Parents Handbook?
Yes, the handbook is written for parents with no abacus background. It shows you what your child is practising at each stage and how to sit with them for a few minutes a day. If you want simple everyday ideas as well, our guide on developing mental math skills at home is a good companion read.
Does my child need to carry the whole kit to every class?
For centre classes the child normally needs the abacus, the current level book and basic stationery, which is why the bag is part of the offline kit. For online classes, keeping the abacus and the printed practice pages on the study table before the class starts saves time. The rest can stay at home.
At what age can my child start, and how long does the course run?
The Mastermind Abacus programme is for children aged 6 to 14. It has 10 levels, each of about three months, with two one-hour classes a week. For younger children of 5 to 6 years we run Lingo Bingo at our offline centres, which prepares them before abacus begins.
