Abacus classes in Paris — live online mental maths for ages 6–14
French primary programmes already have a name for what this builds: les automatismes — the calculation a child no longer has to think about. Ten graded levels, four children to a certified teacher, taught in English at a Paris-time slot you choose. The first class is free.

Les automatismes, and why they are worth training
French primary programmes are unusually explicit about this. Pupils are expected to automate calculation procedures, and the reasoning given is cognitive rather than merely practical: automatised knowledge lowers the mental load, which leaves capacity for the actual reasoning. The cycle 2 programme even sets a marker — by the end of CE1 a pupil should be able to complete twelve fill-in-the-blank equalities in a minute.
That is a clear description of a goal. It is not, in itself, a method for reaching it, and a class of twenty-five leaves little room for the individual repetition it takes.
Abacus training is one route to the same place, running entirely outside school. Ten levels of bead work, then mental calculation without the frame, taught live to four children at a time by Mastermind, which has done nothing else since 2005. We are not affiliated with the Education nationale and claim no approval from it — we simply agree with its description of what a child needs.
Six things, and one of them is free capacity
The bead frame is used hard early and then removed on purpose. What remains is the point.
The movement itself
Bead and finger work fixed in the first level, watched live rather than assumed.
Calculation with nothing in front of them
Midway through, the frame is removed and the arithmetic continues in the head.
Attention held deliberately
The exercise fails the instant concentration lapses, which is what makes it training.
Memory that holds a picture
Keeping a shifting bead image steady, repeatedly, until it costs nothing.
Correct first, rapid second
Graded in that order at every level.
Room left over for the reasoning
Which is the whole point of an automatism, and the reason the programmes value them.
This is what parents tend to report as the levels progress. Reaching it depends on attendance and on a short daily practice. Read the research on abacus training →
What an automatism looks like once it is built
Enrolled Mastermind students at three stages. By the last one the calculation is happening with nothing visible at all.
How the programme is run
A free hour, then a level
One live class, after which the teacher names a starting level. A child who has used an abacus before is assessed onto the right one.
Two live hours a week, Paris time
Timed rounds and bead races on Mastermind’s own portal, four children to one certified teacher, the same teacher each week.
The kit sent to you
An abacus, the level workbooks and a Parent Handbook, with the student app and free Virtual Abacus for five to ten minutes on other days.
Ten levels, each with an assessment
A quarter or so per level, and a graded result at the end of it. Where a child needs longer, they take the level again instead of being swept forward.
At home you will need: a laptop or a tablet, a connection that does not drop, and a corner where nobody interrupts. The vacances scolaires do not interrupt the levels either. More on the format: how our live online classes work.
One free hour, and an honest answer about the English
Watch whether your child follows the teacher comfortably. That is the real question here.
Alongside school, and alongside soutien scolaire
Three different things, often confused. It is worth knowing which one you are looking for.
| This programme | Tutoring or soutien scolaire | |
|---|---|---|
| What it follows | Its own ten-level curriculum | The school programme |
| What it targets | Automatised calculation | This term’s content and marks |
| Language | Taught in English | Usually in French |
| Time frame | Two to three years of levels | Usually a term or a year |
| Group size | Four children, fixed | Varies, often one-to-one |
| When it makes sense | Early, while automatisms are still forming | When there is specific ground to make up |
Neither replaces the other, and neither replaces the class teacher. A child who is genuinely behind in the school programme needs soutien scolaire, not this.
Certified teachers, four children at a time
Company-trained and consistent week to week, teaching in English.
Six to fourteen, with enough English to follow
- Bilingual and international-school families — where the English is already there
- Children in French schools with good English — the free class is how you check
- Beginners at the boulier — counting and following instructions is the whole requirement
- Quick but hesitant — accuracy is graded ahead of speed at every level
Use the hour to check the English
A real lesson on the portal enrolled students use, with a certified teacher and your child doing the work. The maths will not be the obstacle. Watch whether your child follows the instructions comfortably, because that is what actually determines whether this works for your family — and if it does not, we will say so.

Starting with the two that matter
Is this connected to the Education nationale, or approved by it?
No, and we would not claim otherwise. It is a private programme with its own ten-level curriculum, run entirely outside school. We reference the programmes because they describe the goal clearly - automatismes that free a child's attention for reasoning - not because anyone has endorsed us.
Does it follow the school programme?
It sits underneath it. The cycle 2 programme asks pupils to automate calculation procedures, and even sets markers: by the end of CE1 a pupil should complete twelve fill-in-the-blank equalities in a minute. This trains that kind of fluency by a different route, without teaching the syllabus itself.
What language are the classes taught in?
English. The arithmetic and bead work need no translation, but a child does need enough English to follow a live teacher. Many of our Paris families are bilingual or in international schools, and some choose it partly for the English exposure.
My child is in a French public school, not an international one. Will they cope?
Often yes, but it depends entirely on their English rather than their maths. The free class is the honest test - book it and watch whether your child follows the teacher comfortably. If they do not, we will tell you.
Quels créneaux — what hours do you run for Paris?
After-school and weekend slots in Paris time. You choose the day and hour when you book, and the slot stays as booked.
Which areas do you cover?
Paris and the whole Ile-de-France region on identical terms, and the rest of France too, because there is nothing to travel to.
Will my child have one teacher, or several?
Yes, a certified and company-trained teacher, with four children in the class.
How long does the programme run?
Ten levels of roughly three months each, at two live hours a week, each level closing with a graded assessment.
What is the age range and what does it cost?
Six to fourteen. Fees follow the level your child is placed at and the batch, and we set them out after the free class. Nothing obliges you to continue.
Build the automatism early, and see what it frees up
One free class, an honest placement, and a straight answer about the English.
