Twenty-one years of abacus teaching, now in Calgary living rooms
Mastermind Tutorials Pvt. Ltd. has run abacus and mental-math education since 2005, growing to 1,000+ centres and a purpose-built live online platform used by families in 17 countries. Every teacher is company-trained and certified, every level ends in an assessment, and the same curriculum is taught whether a child joins from Evanston, Auburn Bay or Airdrie.
For Calgary families, the format matters as much as the method. Abacus centres here are spread across the quadrants, and a twice-weekly drive across the city — through a Calgary winter, in the dark — is often what stops a good program from lasting the year. Learning live online keeps the teacher and removes the trip.
What your child learns in abacus class — from bead frame to mental math
Your child starts by calculating on a physical abacus, then learns to picture the beads and move them mentally — solving multi-digit questions in their head without paper or a calculator. Along the way they build:
Abacus technique
Correct bead and finger movement from Level 1, watched and corrected live.
Mental math & calculation
Add, subtract, multiply and divide in the mind, without paper or a calculator.
Concentration
Every question asks for full attention, and the habit carries into schoolwork.
Memory & visualization
Holding the abacus image in mind builds working memory.
Speed & accuracy
Timed practice, with progress measured at the end of every level.
Confidence
A child who stops avoiding numbers and starts volunteering answers.
Parents generally report these across the levels. How far a child gets depends on turning up and on a few honest minutes of practice each day. Read the research on abacus training →
Watch a student solve it faster than you can type it
These are enrolled Mastermind students, filmed mid-class. Watch the hands stop moving and the answers keep coming — that is the point at which the abacus has moved into the head.
Inside a Mastermind class: format, levels and timings
Free class & placement
Your child sits a single live hour with a teacher, who then tells you which of the ten levels to begin at. A child who has used an abacus before is assessed and slotted in accordingly.
Two live classes a week, one hour each
Sixty minutes each, on Mastermind’s own portal — timed drills, bead races and flash rounds rather than a teacher talking at a webcam. Four children to a teacher, never more.
Ten progressive levels, about three months each
Roughly a quarter per level, closing with a graded assessment. Nobody advances on a timetable — they advance when the level is genuinely finished.
Practice at home
The bead frame, workbooks and a Parent Handbook arrive at your door. Between classes, the student app and the free Virtual Abacus cover a short daily stint — five to ten minutes is plenty.
At home you need: a laptop or tablet, a connection that holds, and a corner nobody walks through. Batches run in Mountain Time, with after-school weekday and weekend slots; you choose yours when you book the free class. More on the format: how our live online classes work.
Your child’s free class is one click away
An hour of real teaching costs you nothing and tells you more than any brochure will.
Online abacus classes vs travelling to a local centre
What actually changes for a Calgary family when the class comes to them instead of the other way round.
| What matters to you | Mastermind live online | Travelling to a local centre |
|---|---|---|
| Travel | None — your child learns at home | Twice a week across the city, through a Calgary winter |
| Timings | You pick a Mountain Time slot when you book | Fixed to whatever the centre’s timetable allows |
| Class size | Four children to one teacher, always | Often larger, with less individual attention |
| Who teaches | Certified, company-trained teacher, live every class | Varies by centre and instructor |
| Snow days & holidays | Batches run year-round — join from anywhere | Classes stop when the roads or the calendar say so |
| Learning kit | Abacus, books & Parent Handbook delivered home | Collected from the centre |
| Try before you enrol | Free one-hour live class | Sometimes offered |
Comparison reflects Mastermind’s live online format against travelling to a local class; individual providers vary.
Works alongside the math taught in Calgary schools
Alberta’s elementary math curriculum asks children to learn, recall and apply number facts so they can calculate efficiently. Abacus training builds exactly that fluency. Whether your child is in Grade 2 at a Calgary Board of Education school, Grade 5 with Calgary Catholic, in French immersion, or at a charter or independent school, abacus supports the classroom rather than competing with it — the arithmetic underneath is the same everywhere.
Faster, more confident calculation frees your child’s attention for the reasoning, word problems and multi-step work the curriculum is really assessing. Batches run year-round and are not tied to the September–June school year, so a child can start at any point and keep going through the summer break.

Meet our certified abacus teachers
Every class is led by a certified, company-trained Mastermind teacher — never a rotating cast of instructors. These are a few of the educators who make mental math genuinely enjoyable for your child.
Who these classes suit, ages 6 to 14
- Complete beginners — counting and following instructions is the whole entry requirement
- Children who find math slow or stressful — the structured, game-based format rebuilds confidence
- Strong students — who want the speed, accuracy and competition-level mental math school alone does not build
- Children continuing from another centre or program — placed at the right level after a short assessment
- Families outside the city — Airdrie, Chestermere, Okotoks and Cochrane join the same classes
What a first class actually looks like
Nobody pitches anything. Your child is put into a genuine hour of teaching, on the portal enrolled students use, with a certified teacher running it. Stay in the room, watch what holds their attention and what does not, and ask the teacher whatever you want. Pricing comes after, once you have something to judge it against.

Abacus classes in Calgary — your questions answered
Do you have an abacus centre in Calgary?
We teach Calgary families through live online classes rather than a local centre — a certified teacher, a class of four, from your home. No drive across the city, and the classroom experience is the same.
Are there abacus classes near me in northeast or southwest Calgary?
Yes. Because classes are live online, your area makes no difference: children join from Evanston, Saddle Ridge, Panorama Hills, Auburn Bay, Cranston, Signal Hill and the surrounding towns on exactly the same terms. There is nothing to travel to.
What class timings are available for children in Calgary?
After-school weekday and weekend slots, all scheduled in Mountain Time. You pick the day and time that fits around school and activities when you book the free class.
At what age should a child begin abacus training?
Our live online abacus program is for children aged 6 to 14. If a child can count and sit still for instructions, Level 1 will take them. Older starters tend to clear the first few levels quickly.
Will abacus confuse the math my child is taught at school?
No. Alberta’s curriculum asks children to recall and apply number facts, and abacus builds exactly that fluency. It sits underneath school math rather than alongside it, so there is no competing method to confuse.
My child has learned abacus somewhere else. Can they continue?
Yes. We assess first and drop them in at the matching level, so no ground is covered twice.
How long is the full abacus program?
Ten levels, about a quarter each, at two live hours a week. Children move up as they master each level.
How much do abacus classes in Calgary cost?
Fees depend on the level and class, so we share the current figure after your free session — along with the days, timings and what the home kit includes. There is no obligation to enrol.
Do you also teach children in Edmonton, Airdrie and other Alberta towns?
Yes. The same live online classes serve families right across Alberta and beyond — Mastermind teaches students in 17 countries on one shared curriculum.
Try one class. Then decide.
One hour, a real teacher, your own child in front of you. That is a better basis for a decision than anything on this page.
